Community Needs

Community Needs refers to those services, opportunities, and supports designed to respond to concerns and issues identified by the community which are not covered by another program panel. Programs reviewed by the Community Needs panel may include but are not limited to:

·        non-crisis mental health services for adults;

·        caregiver support;

·        family violence prevention; 

·        pregnancy prevention;

·        family planning;

·        adoption services;

·        civic engagement;

·        offender diversion;

·        child abuse neglect and abuse prevention;

·        chemical abuse treatment;

·        volunteer placement;

·        juvenile justice

Decisions on which programs to fund are made on an annual basis by community volunteers. Inclusion on this list of funded programs for the current year is not a guarantee the program will be funded in subsequent years. Funding decisions are based on the availability of funds, quality of the program, and community need.

Programs receiving allocation funding from United Way of Broome County for 2010:

Community Primary Prevention Education
County's only comprehensive victims service agency and only provider of primary prevention education.  
Crime Victims Assistance Center, Inc.

Health and Safety Services
CPR/AED, first aid, babysitter's and home alone safety training providing students with the skills and knowledge to appropriately and responsibly respond to emergent situations.
American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter 

Mental Health Players
Theater group that presents interactive skits to community on various social and psychological issues resulting in increased awareness and problem solving abilities.
Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier, Inc. 

Supervised Visitation
Helps separated parents improve their relationship with their children and help the children develop a safe, positive relationship with non-custodial parent.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program
Education and skill development for teens addressing teen pregnancy prevention and STD/HIV prevention .
