Assisting Older Adults

Community Services Program 
Older adults develop leadership skills and give something back to community by performing volunteer service.  
Johnson City Senior Citizens Center, Inc.

Elder Counseling 
Individuals, couples, or families experiencing difficulties such as depression or anxiety, or problems associated with issues of aging or care giving are counseled privately either at the office or in the client's home. Trained senior volunteers also provide in-home counseling for elderly persons having difficulty adjusting to life's transitions.  
Family and Children’s Society, Inc.
 

Health and Wellness Program  
Provides information and support in maintaining and improving health and wellness conditions of persons age 60 and over. Includes blood pressure screenings, health consultations, hearing and eye exams, and flu and pneumonia shots.  
Johnson City Senior Citizens Center, Inc.

Health Insurance Counseling
Provides free, confidential counseling to assist older adults in understanding insurance policies and practices. Trains volunteers to assist clients in completing insurance claims and to make informed decisions about health insurance choices.

Protection of Adults 
Works to improve quality of life for residents of long-term care facilities by investigating, assessing, and attempting to resolve complaints about such care. Also provides community education regarding residents’ rights.

Public Education/Elder Planning
Provides information to public about issues concerning older adults. Also includes Edward Zola, Jr., Technology Center, Advance Planning for End of Life Program, Finances for Women Course, and Mature Messenger newsletter. Teaches people of high school age and older specifics of planning for one’s future.

Recreation and Education Program
Encourages independence and a high quality of life through socialization. Offers variety of arts and crafts and social activities, as well as educational programs including tax preparation, leadership training, defensive driving, and estate and financial planning.

Senior Activities
Provides programs and activities for older adults to maintain physical and emotional health, develop new skills, and strengthen their links to the community.   
Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome, Inc.
 

Senior Companion Program 
Transports senior citizens of the Deposit area to local supermarket, bank, and other businesses weekly. On occasion, transports seniors to Binghamton or Oneonta shopping on Saturdays.
Deposit Foundation and Rural Housing Services, Inc.
 

Volunteer Services Program 
Recruits and places volunteers aged 55 or older in community service at public and non-profit agencies. Includes service in a variety of positions at more than 125 locations in Broome County. Offers free exercise classes for people with arthritis and Osteoporosis  
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
 

Volunteer Transportation Programs 
Transports frail, elderly adults to senior citizen centers and to volunteer placements in the community. In Deposit area, provides non-emergency transportation for senior citizens and low-income residents to medical and other important appointments in and outside that community. In the Endwell & Binghamton area: transport clients to Adult Day Care Facilities.
