Volunteer

Volunteering is good for the community, and good for you!  There are many ways you can help others: visit a lonely senior, befriend a child, organize a food drive (or one for clothing, toys, toiletries, etc.), help an agency with office duties (telephone, filing, typing), or pick up litter on your daily walk.  United Way's Voluntary Action Center can help you pick the volunteer activity that is right for you.  Just call 729-2592 or email volunteer@uwbroome.org to learn how.

How do you decide what project is right for you?

There are many things to consider before devoting time to a volunteer project.  What need or problem concerns you enough to give your time to it?  What skills do you have to offer?  What would you like to learn by volunteering?  How much time do you want to give?  What do you not want to do?

What can you expect as a volunteer?

You can expect a job that is worthwhile and challenging with planned tasks and appropriate work space.  You can expect reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses, orientation, training, and supervision.  You will receive respect and recognition as a staff member (although unpaid).

What will be expected of you as a volunteer?

You will need to follow organizational guidelines, respect confidentiality of information you work with, know your limitations, request guidance or training as needed, give constructive feedback, and work as a member of a team.
