Results of your donation Donor choice Trust Fund

In our daily activities, a dollar doesn’t go very far. It usually isn’t enough to buy a soft drink and a candy bar, or a cup of coffee and a doughnut. But a $1 per week over a year’s time is enough to provide well-balanced, nutritious meals for 20 impoverished people, or to provide five days of foster care for an infant awaiting adoption.

If the 110,000 people employed in Broome County each agreed to give $1 per week to the annual United Way Campaign, $5.5 million would be raised yearly to support the work of the member agencies and meet the needs of our community, an amount well beyond United Way’s yearly campaign goal.

More than 90 cents of every dollar reaches Broome County residents in need!

United Way keeps costs low. In fact, 90.2 percent of total contributions go directly to health and human service needs.

Results of your gift over a year's time

$1 per week over a year's time is enough to provide:

  • Two nights of emergency shelter for a homeless teenager;

  • Transportation to doctors' appointments for two senior citizens living in rural areas; or

  • Eight weeks of after-school sports activities for a middle school student.

$2.50 per week for a year is enough to provide:

  • School supplies and book bags for five children living in a shelter for abused spouses;

  • Thirty-seven weeks of hot lunches for a senior citizen living on a low, fixed income;

  • Eight basketballs and other sports equipment used by hundreds of youngsters and adults;

  • A five-week program of swimming lessons for 12 children from low-income families; or

  • Two weeks of groceries for a family of five who are experiencing unemployment because of business mergers or downsizing.

$5 per week for a year would provide:

  • Twelve professional family counseling sessions for each of four families troubled by teenage pregnancy, adolescent drug usage, or other problems;

  • Group therapy for 16 teenagers to teach them anger management skills to help reduce violent juvenile crime;

  • Special equipment to allow 15 seniors suffering from arthritis or physically challenged youngsters to more easily use computers;

  • Five nights of emergency shelter for two homeless people; or

  • Three weeks of day camp for a child whose family could not afford the cost to attend.

$10 per week for a year would provide:

  • Weekly professional counseling session for one year to increase parenting and coping skills while reducing the stress caused by poverty;

  • Job preparedness training, pregnancy education, and other life coping skills for 15 teenagers in danger of dropping out of high school;

  • A full year of after school programs and activities for a middle school student who otherwise would be home alone;

  • Training to allow three teenagers to become lifeguards; or

  • The needed first aid supplies used by two after school childcare sites for a full year.
