Day of Caring 2007 Projects

These activities will be worked on by volunteers during this year's Day of Caring:

Action for Older Persons, Inc.

Volunteer Recognition Event—Pre-celebration decorating, food preparation, serving, hosting during actual event.

All Women’s Help Center

Prepping and Painting—Tape and sand doors and molding, remove border wallpaper. Paint six rooms.

American Civic Association

Landscaping—Weed, reapply mulch cover, plant assorted bulbs and ground cover plants, trim existing shrubs, etc.

Animal Care Council

Painting and Cleaning—Painting, cleaning, and if possible, some skilled carpenter and plumber work.

Baden-Powell Council, Boy Scouts of America

Camp Tuscarora Maintenance—Wood cutting, roof replacement, brush removal, and painting of building.

Boy Scout Office—Painting exterior of Boy Scout office.

Binghamton Housing Authority

Carlisle Fall Celebrations—Celebrations to enrich lives of more than 60 elderly and disabled residents. Volunteers will cook and serve picnic lunch and provide musical entertainment at Carlisle Hills Community Center.

Saratoga Fall Celebrations—Volunteers will cook and serve picnic lunch and provide musical entertainment to over 60 elderly and disabled residents at Saratoga Heights.

Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park

Pavilion Painting—Sand and paint metal columns and paint wood picnic tables in pavilion located on upper parking lot of Morgan Road.

Zoo Clean-Up—Various clean up projects zoo wide, such as: raking, hauling/removing tree branches that have fallen, touch up painting, etc.

Boys & Girls Club of Western Broome

Install Storage Shelving and HooksInstall 75 hooks to store lacrosse equipment as well as more appropriate shelving units for variety of supplies and other equipment.

Paint Ballet Room—Put two coats of paint on walls that are approximately 9 feet high.

Paint Computer Room Closet—Paint walls of large closet off of computer room.

Paint or stain storage bench—Either paint or stain storage bench in small conference room.

Storage Shelving—Erect four 8-foot by 24-inch shelving units, three shelves high.

Broome County Department of Social Services

Cleaning Visiting Rooms—Clean toys and organize them in five visiting rooms that families utilize in supervised visits.

Broome County Habitat for Humanity

Home Sweet Habitat Home—Painting, carpentry, landscaping, and maintenance on a donated garage. Specific work depends upon the weather.

Broome Developmental Services

Cemetery Beautification and Clean Up—Clean up Glenwood and Floral Park Cemeteries.

Broome-Tioga ARC

Cutler Pond Road, Project 1—Trim bushes, plant various flowers, rake, mulch and repair fence.

Cutler Pond Road, Project 2—Build storage shed, stain picnic tables, touch up painting and cleaning in program areas.

Riverside Drive: Painting—Paint porch and wheelchair ramp.

Carlton Street.: Painting and Landscaping—Paint hallways and living rooms in four apartments. Plant shrubbery, perennials, and put in mulch for property that was flooded in 2006 and is to be reoccupied.

Hamilton Drive: Landscaping—Plant various perennials, raking, trimming, general yard work.

Wildwood Drive: Landscaping—Weeding, raking and planting flowers.

Clarkson Drive: Landscaping—Landscaping in front and back, weeding, mulch and trim the grounds.

Helen Street: Painting—Wash exterior windows, paint dining room and hallways.

Sunset Drive: Landscaping—Planting ground cover (rug juniper plants) on front bank to prevent erosion. Dig hole, add top soil and fertilizer. Mulch and fabric already in place.

Camp Sertoma

Boat Storage Cover and Locking Device—Design and build cover and boat locking device for boat rack.

Door Repairs—Repairs to doors in pool-area changing rooms.

Fencing—Install fence area around dumpsters and archery area.

Pool Pumphouse Extension Room—Install door, put in floor, and screen in eves.

Flag Pole Flower Box—Build hexagon-shaped box around flag pole. Each side is 4-feet long by 2-timbers high.

Flower Box—Build a 8-foot by 34-foot flower box made of 4-by-8 landscape timber in front of museum.

Painting and staining various places—Painting and staining various items/places around camp.

Road repairs—Filling holes in dirt road.

Children’s Home

Exterior Painting/Renovation Project—Scraping and painting garage, office, sheds, and various trim on exterior house. If weather is poor, volunteers will do interior painting.

Jungle Gym Update—Sanding and painting jungle gym.

Painting: Close to Home—Painting downstairs hall and bathroom.

TASP Painting—St. Catherine Rec.: Paint roof above back door and first floor exterior windows

Community Options, Inc.

Create Wall Mural or Stenciling—Create passive wall mural on 8-foot by 12-foot wall or do stenciling around room.

Paint—Paint entryway, hallway and outside trim (doors and windows) on first floor only.

Danielle House, Inc.

Fall House Cleaning—Thoroughly clean all seven bedrooms (move furniture, clean and wax floors, windows, etc.)

Discovery Center of the Southern Tier

Exhibit Rehabilitation—Cleaning, refurbishing, cataloguing, and installing of artwork chairs in café exhibit area. Refurbishing and upgrades to hospital area (artwork painting required).

Landscaping Upgrade—Weeding, trimming, dead heading, and mulching of flower beds surrounding the Discovery Center, including new story garden.

Paint, Polish, and Spruce Up—Paint, clean and straightening up of the exhibits in the Discovery Center.

`Theater Painting—

Elizabeth Church Manor

Landscaping—Volunteers weed, prune, separate plants, etc.

Endicott Visitor Center

Visitor Center Preservation—Scrape and paint small areas of exterior wall of circa 1904 Visitor Center mansion. Volunteers will paint and scrape first story, going no higher than 6-foot ladder.

Fairview Recovery Services

Painting—Paint six bedrooms at Addiction Crisis Center.

Family & Children’s Society

Paint trim-work and room—Paint visitation room and another larger room.

Family Violence Prevention Council

Putting Information Packets Together—Put conference information packets together.

Girl Scouts-Indian Hills Council, Inc.

Amahami Trail Work—Clear trails and site areas of brush and branches. Cut branches by using handsaws, pruners, or chainsaw. Assist with loading dump truck for disposal.

Painting interior—Paint four offices.

Good Shepherd-Fairview Home

Winterization and landscaping—General clean up and mulching of grounds.

Goodwill Theatre

Painting Municipal Building/Firehouse Stage—Paint white trim on fire house at corner of Corliss and Willow Streets in Johnson City and exterior red brick at 67 Broadway.

Greater Binghamton Health Center

Cemetery Restoration and Clean Up—Raking, mowing, digging, landscaping, identifying and/or locating markers, painting/cleaning of grave markers, utilizing metal detectors.

Landscaping—Weeding flower beds around grounds.

Painting and Staining Ramps—Paint handicap ramps at cottages 49 and 82. Stain ramps at building 41 and cottage 87.

Humane Society

Painting—Clean and paint front office, upstairs intake area, cat isolation area, and veterinarian room.

Jewish Community Center

Playground clean-up—Remove weeds from playground, mulch, rake, and fluff up; redo tribute areas where needed.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels Delivery—Accompany scheduled volunteers in delivering meals for the day.

Mental Health Association

Vehicle Beautication Project—Help clean and detail four agency vehicles.

Mom’s House

Cooking—Make pizzas with children which will be served for lunch.

Lawn Care and Clean-up—Wash windows, mow lawn, weed whack, and wash playground equipment.

TLC to Infants—Feed, rock, play with and read to the infants in the 8-week to 2-year-old room.

Renaissance Plaza, Ltd.

Landscaping—Help with landscaping, pruning, trimming, and maybe assist with painting in front of building.

RSVP

Bus Wash and Detail—Wash and detail two 12-passenger buses inside and out.

Samaritan House

Mop It Up! Clean It Up! Paint It Up!—Mop, clean, paint specific areas of Samaritan House.

Sheltered Workshop for the Disabled, Inc.

Spruce Up Outside—Remove rubbish, trim branches, etc., as needed around building.

Window Display—Create display using products manufactured by Sheltered Workshop.

SOS Shelter

Painting Maintenance—Paint front porch, steps, and window sills at non-residency service site.

Southern Tier AIDS Program

Positive Happenings (Paint)—Paint hallway, entry area, conference room, and one handicapped bathroom.

Southern Tier Celebrates

Garden of Ideas—Create assortment of garden foliage and creatures to be exhibited at First Night Binghamton. Use bamboo, tissue paper, etc., and lots of imagination! Volunteers will work under direction of teaching artist.

St. James Middle School

Update Grounds and Building—Variety of clean-up and repair projects.

Tri-Cities Opera Co., Inc.

Upgrade of Costume Shop—Sort and match shoes and jewelry.

United Way of Broome County

Clean Up and Trim Border—Trim brush, rake, cut down branches, weed, etc., as needed along edge of property facing Vestal Parkway and South Jensen Road. Weed the flower garden and plant more flowers.

Paint Director of Finance Office—Paint walls of office, which will be cleaned out prior to painting.

Waterman Conservation Education Center

Trail Maintenance—Brush removal, debris clean-up, cut back branches, raking and weed whacking on trails (four separate projects).

West Family YMCA

Redecorate the Men’s and Ladies’ Rooms—Prepare and repaint men’s and women’s restrooms.

Wilson Children’s Center

Center Clean Up—Clean up playground area (pick up branches, rocks, etc. )

YMCA-Binghamton

Covered Dish for Teen Moms—Volunteers purchase ingredients and make total of 50 covered dish casseroles for teen moms and other parents with special needs. Drop off on Sept. 11.

Landscaping—Fall clean up on all landscaped areas.

Painting—Volunteers paint lobby, dorm lounge, board room, fitness center, and hallways.

YWCA

Young Wonders Literacy Project—Organize library of books, read some stories to children and develop literacy bags for family sharing.
